Card. Toppo of Ranchi renews call to evangelize India
The missionaries should not lose the spirit of 'mission ad gentes' in India despite stiff opposition from native religious groups such as Hindus, Buddhist, Sikhs and Jain , said Cardinal Telesphore Toppo. The President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) spoke on his return from the Vatican who went there to participate in a meeting of the Neocatechumenal Way about evangelization in Asia together with many Asian bishops. The theme of the meeting was John Paul II's declaration "Asia, our common task for the third millenium". Pope John Paul II always used to emphasize that first and second millineum's targeted Europe, Americas and Africa and the focus of third millineum should be Asia as most of the Muslim countries are closed to evangelism. Asia has the 40% of the world population and home to non Abrahamic religions in the world. Anti-conversion laws enacted by many state Governments do not seem to deter Cardinal Toppo who stressed that the "Church is fundamentally missionary" and remains so.

Religion for a Captive Audience, Paid For by Taxes
But the only way an inmate could qualify for this kinder mutation of prison life was to enter an intensely religious rehabilitation program and satisfy the evangelical Christians running it that he was making acceptable spiritual progress. The program — which grew from a project started in 1997 at a Texas prison with the support of George W. Bush, who was governor at the time — says on its Web site that it seeks “to ‘cure’ prisoners by identifying sin as the root of their problems” and showing inmates “how God can heal them permanently, if they turn from their sinful past.”
